Professional commercial wet dry vacuum on a cart in a clean facility

Wet Dry Vacuum Buying Guide for Canadian Facilities

Wrong wet dry vacuum = extra trips to dump the tank, clogged filters, and crews standing around. Right one? Spill, debris, done.

Use this as a quick chooser—not a manual. Match the job, buy once, move on.

Chart matching facility jobs to wet dry vacuum tank size, HEPA, and corded vs cordless

Quick chooser: job → machine

  • Quick spills / stairwells / vans: small portable (4–6 gal)
  • Daily janitorial / warehouse floors: mid commercial (12–20 gal), often with cart
  • Big water dumps / plant floors: industrial drum (24–55 gal)
  • Fine dust, hospitals, schools: HEPA filtration
  • No outlet / rooftops / parking decks: cordless wet dry vacuum
  • Heavy debris + liquids all day: corded commercial wet/dry with solid airflow

Wet/dry vs shop vac (simple)

Same family. “Shop vac” usually means a rugged wet/dry for workshops and job sites. “Wet dry vacuum” is the broader commercial label—same idea, often tougher tanks and better filtration for facilities.

If you only need a garage-style unit, start in shop vac. If you clean buildings for a living, stay in wet/dry commercial.

Size guide

Small portable (≈4–6 gal)

Stairs, washrooms, service vans, punch-list cleanups. Light to haul. Empties more often.

Examples: Shop-Vac 6 HP 5 gallon portable wet dry vacuum, RIDGID 6 gallon wet dry vacuum.

Mid commercial (≈12–20 gal)

Most small janitorial and warehouse crews live here. Bigger tank, fewer dumps, often a cart or wheels for long corridors.

Examples: Shop-Vac SVX2 18 gallon wet dry shop vacuum, Nilfisk AERO 26 commercial wet dry vacuum, Kärcher NT 30/1 Tact industrial wet dry vacuum.

Large industrial (≈24–55 gal)

Plant floors, flood recovery, strip-and-wax slurry, long runs without stopping. Heavy. Park it where the mess is.

Examples: Dustbane 24 gallon industrial wet dry vacuum, Shop-Vac 55 gallon industrial wet dry vacuum.

When you need HEPA

HEPA traps fine dust that standard filters blow back into the air. Use it when:

  • Hospitals, clinics, labs, food areas
  • Construction dust (drywall, silica-adjacent cleanup)
  • Allergy-sensitive offices or schools
  • Any site that asks for HEPA on the PO

Look for true HEPA (not “HEPA-style”). A solid pick: CAT 16 gallon stainless HEPA wet dry vacuum.

When cordless makes sense

Cordless shines when outlets are scarce—parking garages, outdoor pads, server rooms, after-hours jobs where cords trip people. Trade-off: runtime and tank size.

For jobsite mobility: Milwaukee M18 FUEL 6 gallon cordless wet dry vacuum.

Still do most floor work on corded. More power, no battery swap mid-spill.

Fast picks by role

  • New janitorial crew: mid-size corded wet/dry + spare filters
  • Warehouse maintenance: 18+ gal with wheels or cart
  • Hospital / facility custodial: HEPA wet dry vacuum, quiet if night shift
  • Mobile techs: portable or cordless for the van

Ready to choose?

Match tank size to how often you hate dumping. Match filtration to the dust. Match power to the outlet—or skip the cord.
